Movie Monday (The Host)
Monday, January 16, 2012Breaking News!
Well this may not be so breaking news now. It has been awhile since The Host has been optioned for film. It seems like forever since I heard the news about there being a movie on The Host. But it has also been forever until they had finally made a decision of who was going to play who. The cast is no where near finished, but I discovered this awesome article that tells all about the casting. You can read about it HERE.
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.
When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love. --Goodreads
I read The Host when it was published in 2008, wanting to try to feel closer to the Twilight series while Stephenie Meyer was in between novels. I loved The Host, which was really surprising since it is all sci-fi that blows your mind; I wasn't into that kind of stuff during that time. After reading the book, I think this book is what drew me to other sci-fi, dystopian types like The Hunger Games. Now the movie sounds fantastic and I'm really excited to show you the casting for the love triangle.
Since Melanie is the star of the whole thing, I'd like to show her first. Melanie is going to be played by Saoirse Ronan. Remember Ronan? She is best known for her role in 2009's adaptation of The Lovely Bones. As much as I still look at her like this old-school girl from The Lovely Bones and not at all like the scary version that she portrayed in Hanna in 2011, I am not sure what Ronan has up her sleeve. It will be interesting to see what she brings to the role.
Max Irons will be playing Jared. Jared was sort of a jerk, at times. I don't remember liking him much when I was reading. Max Irons is known for his role as Henry in Red Riding Hood. Since I was more of a Ian-kind-of-gal, while reading The Host, I'll move on to him.
Ian, who seemed like the perfect guy for Wanderer, is being played by Jake Abel, who I simply adore. He has landed roles in TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and Supernatural. Lately, I saw him in I am Number Four and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I'm really excited because I know Abel will definitely be great for this role.
We will just have to see how this movie looks when it comes to the big screen in 2013.
