Divergent Book Discussion (5)
Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Hey, people from Earth and other people who are not from here, for the next 12 weeks we will be giving you the awesomeness that is DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth. Be sure to show up, because we are giving away some goodies, check it out HERE. Just a side note, I will be asking a question after each discussion post. Be sure to follow the discussion and don’t be scared to join in on our discussion/ questions. Those who entered the contest will receive extra entries for answering a question. Every week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we will discuss three chapters per week: tell you about the plot, and other random bits of spicy goodness that you should definitely know about (all relating to Divergent). Just for your curiosity: helping me out with this discussion is Jackie, one of my best friends (please say hello to her). Basically these posts will be categorized by person. Jackie hasn't read the book so be sure to read her first impressions while she reads along and if you have read Divergent, be sure to read my input (this will be the my second read through). If you missed a post and want to check out the schedule, go HERE. Come and join us in our quest of discussing DIVERGENT.
CHAPTER 5
The Choosing Ceremony has begun and the two Prior kids make their choice of faction. Everyone is shocked and I am sure they will both be the talk of the town.
Today's Topics:
Guess I don’t get to find out how the Abnegation marriages work, but that’s okey dokey. Dauntless. I totally saw that choice coming. She isn’t honest (by any means), has average intelligence, is not selfless and does not enjoy trying to be, and isn’t for peace (and thank god for that because that would be so boring, I need action!). Though, I’ve got to say that I thought it was funny when she accidently let her blood drop in between the Abnegation and Dauntless bowls. Foreshadowing much? J Anyways, I thought it was horrible that her dad was really upset with his children’s choice. I mean I am just a reader, and I knew neither of them was going to stay Abnegation. Just saying dad, you need to take more notice of your kids interests.
The Choosing Ceremony. This is where we finally get to see what choices these two kids make. Before I get on to talk about their choices, there was a kid who tripped on his way to the "stage" (choosing bowls) and all I could think of was the Oscars with Jennifer Lawrence.
Does no one feel sorry for this poor kid from Dauntless? Anyway, Caleb chooses Erudite which was a total surprise for the first time around. As much as I still think he was better fit for Abnegation, I feel that Caleb has that personality that sneaks up on you. He is Abnegation, in the way, that he seems almost invisible but he is very smart. Do I like Erudite? No. That may be, in part, because Beatrice has a problem with them too because she takes sides with her father in not liking the faction that is bashing Marcus but I still don't like them.
The second time reading this has definitely showed me all the hints that Beatrice was going to choose Dauntless.
Jackie made a point about their father being so shocked and I agree. However, faction transfers are probably rare for Abnegation because it is showing selfishness by even choosing outside the faction, by thinking of yourself rather than others. It was not only her father that was shocked but everyone there. Because not only was this an Abnegation transfer but two Abnegation transfers in the same family. Shocking.
How do you feel about their faction choices?

Caleb's Choice and Beatrice's Choice
Honestly, Caleb’s choice of
not choosing Abnegation was not surprising to me. On aspect of his choice that
kind of did surprise me was that he chose Erudite. I just can’t really picture
him being confident and comfortable in that faction. I think he was so much
better qualified for Abnegation, just because of his general attitude and the
selfless actions he continuously performs. But, this is his choice after all,
so good luck to him surviving with the brainiacs!
