The Hating Game meets Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist by way of Morgan Matson in this unforgettable romantic comedy about two rival overachievers whose relationship completely transforms over the course of twenty-four hours. Today, she hates him. It’s the last day of senior year. Rowan Roth and Neil McNair have been bitter rivals for all of high school, clashing on test scores, student council elections, and even gym class pull-up contests. While Rowan, who secretly wants to write romance novels, is anxious about the future, she’d love to beat her infuriating nemesis one last time. Tonight, she puts up with him. When Neil is named valedictorian, Rowan has only one chance at victory: Howl, a senior class game that takes them all over Seattle, a farewell tour of the city she loves. But after learning a group of seniors is out to get them, she and Neil reluctantly decide to team up until they’re the last players left—and then they’ll destroy each other. As Rowan spends more time with Neil, she realizes he’s much more than the awkward linguistics nerd she’s sparred with for the past four years. And, perhaps, this boy she claims to despise might actually be the boy of her dreams. Tomorrow…maybe she’s already fallen for him.
Rowan has spent her entire high school career competing against Neil for the title of valedictorian. It’s the last day of school and she’s ready to finally accept her award, more importantly she’s excited to beat Neil one last time. The only problem: Neil is awarded valedictorian. However, it’s a tradition at Rowan’s high school that the graduating class participates in a citywide scavenger hunt. Rowan vows that this scavenger hunt is her time to shine. In a cruel turn of events, though, Rowan is forced to team up with Neil. In the span of less than 24 hours, these rivals will discover that there’s more here than what meets the eye. In this superb contemporary, Rachel Lynn Solomon is able to capture readers’ hearts with the most swoon-worthy love story.
- Having never read Rachel Lynn Solomon’s work before, I was so happily surprised to love her writing right from the very first page. The story takes place within 24 hours and some may think that's not enough time to flush out a story. However, the way Solomon approached the story—the way she structured the narrative—was truly magical. It was absolutely lovely! Readers will barely notice that less than 24 hours pass, when the characters start to feel like people they’ve known forever.
- There’s a side story in the TV show, Modern Family, where the two school overachievers compete against each other for the title of valedictorian. And of course, by the end of the episode, they fall in love. Ever since I saw that episode, I always thought that would make a great book premise. And it most certainly does!
- Solomon takes that premise but adds so much more depth to it. Each character has layers to them that readers learn as the story goes along. Rowan secretly loves romance books but because all her peers think they're trashy, she’s hidden that part away. While Neil seems mysterious and obnoxious in the beginning, the more Rowan discovers about his personal life, the more readers fall in love with him. It's the small details that make this novel come alive.
- Not only does Today Tonight Tomorrow involve overachievers competing against each other but it also includes a citywide scavenger hunt. I absolutely adore reading about games and there’s just something about scavenger hunts that are just so much fun! The scavenger hunt plays as a love letter to Seattle. I've never been there but with each clue completed, the descriptions made me so curious to see a city rich in culture and history.
- As much as my graduating senior class didn’t end with a scavenger hunt, Today Tonight Tomorrow is still able to capture the bittersweet feeling of walking the school’s halls that one last time, saying goodbye to childhood friends, and preparing for the next chapter in life. There’s something so nostalgic and real about Rowan's story. Even if you haven't graduated yet, this novel reminisces about the good and bad of high school that will certainly give you some major feels.
- This entire novel, with the story taking place in only 24 hours, is able to bring its readers on a rollercoaster of emotions. That was one wild, adventurous, romantic, and dramatic day! While the ending opened up a new chapter in these characters’ lives, it's truly difficult to say goodbye; I never wanted the book to end.
The book quickly became a new favorite, and I’m looking forward to reading more from Rachel Lynn Solomon in the future. Today Tonight Tomorrow captures readers from the very first page with its well-developed characters, enemies-to-lovers romance, and love letter to Seattle. You definitely don't want to miss this one!
